Monument to the Revolution of the People of Moslavina Podgarić, Croatia
Designed by Dušan Džamonja & Vladimir Veličković, 1967

In 1941, when Axis forces took over what is now Croatia, the resistance, led by Joseph Tito, started here- in Moslavina.
The wooded hills around the small village of Podgarić became a hub in which the Partisans trained and from which they acted.
The Spomenik that stands here today, overlooking Podgarić is a monument to the bravery of these people who stood up to defend their values, country, and lives.
900 of them are buried underneath the Spomenik, and many more- in a nearby cemetery that was part of a huge hospital the partisans had built in the woods.

This massive concrete monument impressed me so much that I couldn't stop circling it, trying to absorb its spirit. I felt like I was watching a majestic bird of prey standing up to protect its nest. It filled me with wonder and respect.
